​For most of human history, funerals were not led by professionals.

They were held by families, neighbours, faith communities, and local networks. Care of the body often took place in the home. People gathered to wash and dress the person who had died. They prepared food, told stories, sang, prayed, sat vigil, and supported one another through grief.

In this sense, funerals belonged to the community.
